The Pros and Cons of Dogs Chewing Rawhide
Rawhide generally refers to the inner layer of cowhide. Many pet owners offer rawhide chews to their pets as a way to keep them entertained and to help strengthen their teeth. Some experts believe that dogs enjoy rawhide because of their wild dog instincts. Historically, wild dogs would attack and bite into their prey, then tear through the skin to access the meat.
Rawhide chews can mimic a dog's wild instincts. Many dogs, especially younger ones, have a natural urge to chew. Rawhide provides an acceptable "toy" for them to chew on, while also offering the benefits of the chewing action, such as applying pressure to gums and teeth, which can help strengthen them.
As a pet owner, you need to be careful not to let your dog chew or swallow large chunks of rawhide, as this could lead to vomiting or diarrhea. Make sure the rawhide chews you give your pet are large enough to prevent them from swallowing it whole. If your pet accidentally swallows a big piece, it typically gets digested over time without requiring surgery, but it might still cause discomfort.
Keep in mind that when rawhide becomes small enough to be swallowed easily, it should be taken away from your pet.
Rawhide contains some calories and protein and is generally digestible, but it's not considered a "food for dogs." It should be offered as a supplement to a balanced diet, serving as a snack or a chew toy. Although there are benefits to chewing rawhide, excessive consumption can lead to too many calories. Moderation is key—some suggest that chewing rawhide for two hours a day is sufficient for most pets.
Pets with a history of vomiting, diarrhea, allergies, or special dietary needs should not consume rawhide unless approved by a veterinarian. While most dogs do not react negatively to rawhide, some might be allergic to its components. The real risk arises when dogs swallow a piece that's too large, which can get stuck in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines, requiring surgery for removal.
